GIANT rats are running amok on a Grimethorpe street, according to concerned residents.

People on High Street claim persistent missed litter collections and the state of the nearby dyke has caused 'Jack Russell-sized' rodents to become a common sight.

Coun Roy Miller said: "Pest control officers surveyed both sides of High Street and the length of the nearby dyke this week. They identified a couple of minor issues so these have been reported to the relevant departments and will be dealt with.

"The pest control officers could not see any definite evidence of rodent activity and would not want to randomly bait with rodenticide along the length of the dyke due to the risk of non-target poisoning of water voles."
