The decision on whether Jack Butland or Luke Steele becomes Barnsley's first choice 'keeper will be based on their performances in training, says manager David Flitcroft.
The Reds boss claims he has not decided if he will reinstate Steele when he returns from a back injury which prompted the loan signing of Stoke City's England international stopper Butland, who has played the last three games.
Steele had a tough start to the season and was replaced by another loanee in Mike Pollitt who is also injured. Flitcroft told the Chronicle: "Like with every position, the decision will be based on performances on the training pitch. Steeley's attitude since he has been out of the team has been superb and he is not far away from being back in training.
"I am delighted that, for the first time since I have been at the club, we have two genuine contenders for the number one spot. Jack has conceded five goals in three games but two of them have been penalties.
"We have been flying by the seat of our pants a little bit with not having a second 'keeper on the bench in the last few matches but we have done the research and it is once in 85 games that a goalkeeper gets sent off. We had a contingency plan for that but we're looking to get Steeley back."
