Pupils at Shafton Primary donned their gowns and mortar boards for a special graduation ceremony.

A total of 29 children earned their bronze award as part of the Children's University programme, which encourages school kids to take part in after school clubs.

Children were rewarded after stacking up 30 hours of extracurricular activities.

Headteacher Ruth Lyons said the programme has been running for the last year and the school offers a range of activities. These include cookery classes, gardening and rounders groups.

Mayor of Barnsley Ken Richardson, came to congratulate the pupils and children enjoyed a video of a real graduation ceremony at Huddersfield University.

Mrs Lyons said the ceremony highlighted how school can extend outside of the classroom.

"It's to say there's no limit to what you can do and it's about building their self confidence and social skills from any team activity," she said.
