THE Barnsley Green Party has nominated its first ever electoral candidate ready for May's general election.

Candidate Michael Short will be the first person to stand in the area for the Barnsley Green Party, set up last summer.

Michael, born and bred in Barnsley, currently works in Barnsley Central as a trade union convenor, negotiating for better working conditions and rights.

In his nomination statement, Michael said: "The Green Party represents the best hope now for a fairer society. This is crucially important in Barnsley, an area where a quarter of children are living in poverty and which is the fourth-most deprived area in the Yorkshire and Humber region."
