NEARLY 3,000 new houses could be built in the Hoyland area in the next 20 years according to maps unveiled by the council which set out what land should be used for across Barnsley.

The local plan is about to open for six weeks of consultation in which time people can write to the council with their views.

More than 600 houses can be accommodated, the plan says on a 22-hectare site north of Hoyland Road, Hoyland Common.

Church View, Tinker Lane, Hoyland Road, Hawshaw Lane and Upper Hoyland Road would all back onto it, and the northern edge of the new development would border new employment sites.

Springwood Farm and surrounding land in Hoyland south of Cloughfields Road could accommodate 520 houses, it says.

Another 642 could go on four adjacent plots all near Elsecar railway station, between Armroyd Lane, Fitzwilliam Street, and the railway line.

Almost 500 houses could be built on a plot near Hemingfield alongside the A6195. It would stretch from the Hemingfield Road roundabout towards the Cortonwood roundabout, on the opposite side to the Hillies golf course.

Once enacted, the local plan will be used as a guide to determine all planning applications submitted to the council.
