A successful ice-dancing schoolboy who dreams of representing Britain at the Olympics has picked up another accolade.

Dominic Barter scooped the 'Most Inspiring Sportsperson' at the Sheffield Youth Sports Awards held at Sheffield Hallam University.

The 12-year-old, who is currently British Solo Ice Dance Champion in the pre-novice men’s category, wakes up before 5pm several days a week in order to train before school.

He started skating in 2008 and competes across Britain with the aim of eventually reaching the Winter Olympics.

Teacher Janine Walker put Dominic forward for the award.

"Dominic has to be very dedicated," she said. "Not many young people are so passionate to fulfil their dreams that they wake up at 4.45am to travel to IceSheffield ice rink and return back to school on time to continue their education."

The Stocksbridge High School pupil is training hard at the moment to defend his British title at the higher level - novice - in June.

He said: "Young people from across Sheffield turned up for the awards - there were some really interesting stories and achievements. I didn’t expect to win, but I did; it's epic."

The youngster's next fundraising event, to help pay for his training and competitions, will be a gig by Mr Creepy and the Crawlies on Saturday May 11 at St John's Church, Deepcar. For more information visit dominicbarter.co.uk
