Impressionist Alistair McGowan was in Barnsley yesterday to film a piece for The One Show about the town's distinctive accent.

The funnyman visited Shaw Lane Cricket Club with a film crew to shoot a segment for the BBC1 show about the evolution of accents and sounds around the country.

Alistair, 48, said it was interesting to hear how accents in the same region can vary, and said Barnsley has a particularly distinctive one.

"This is the seventh place we've visited.

"We're looking at how accents have changed within Yorkshire and we're going to speak to a couple of locals to hear the differences and see what sounds I can impersonate and what's typical for the town."

Alistair, who plays tennis, was filmed playing cricket and the producers enlisted the help of Jack Holden, secretary of Barnsley Cricket Club, to give him a few tips on batting.

"With a bit more practise, I think we might have ourselves a new batsman," joked Jack, who thinks people in Barnsley are losing their accent.

During a break Alistair obliged the Chronicle in having a go at one the town's more difficult sayings and his attempt at 'Whowashiwiwashiwihersen?' was word perfect, even though he was baffled by its meaning.

• The Barnsley segment is expected to be aired on the show within the next month.
