BARNSLEY Council has used less than 30 per cent of its grit stocks, the Chronicle has learned.

Concern had been raised by members of the public that grit supplies could be running out given recent snowy weather in the borough, but the council has confirmed it has more than 10,000 tonnes left in stock at its two salt domes in Smithies and Penistone.

To date it has put 3,843 tonnes down on roads and streets across the borough and has 10,159 tonnes remaining, which means to date only about 27 cent of its total stock has been used.

The spokesman said: “We are currently into week ten of a 16 week period of winter maintenance therefore the stock we have is more than sufficient.”
