Penistone Church's challenge for the County Senior Premier Division title was dealt a major blow on Saturday as they went down 2-0 at home to lowly Ecclesfield Red Rose.
As it was the only top flight match that was not called off due to the rainy weather, Church had the chance to close the gap on runaway leaders Oughtibridge. But the defeat leaves them 14 points adrift with three games in hand while third-placed Handsworth are just two points behind the Barnsley side having played four fewer games.
Penistone Church reserves also lost 2-0 at Jubilee Sports in Division One and slipped out of the promotion places down to fourth.
Division Two leaders North Gawber Colliery dropped their first points since October as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Dronfield in their first league match of 2014. Dronfield took the lead then James Popplewell won and scored a last-minute penalty to preserve Gawber's three-year unbeaten home record. They are now six points clear of fellow town team Kingstone United who have two games in hand.
Gawber's lead would have been halved if it had not been for Worsbrough Bridge reserves who came from 2-0 down to win 4-2 at third-placed Bawtry. Tom Peace netted twice while Jed Phillips and Dean Sidebottom also struck.
In the Barnsley Sunday League, Craig Eland’s brace helped resurgent Cudworth West End to a shock 3-0 win over Royal Albert in Division One. Albert have flown up the divisions in recent years, have made the final rounds of both the Challenge Cup and Hospital Cup, and are expected to be in the mix for promotion to the Premier Division when the leagues are restructured in the summer. They would have gone top of the table with a win but were comprehensively beaten by West End who moved out of the relegation zone with the three points.Eland opened the scoring then Albert missed a penalty and scored an own goal before Eland completed the home victory.
Bullshead Spirit won 4-3 at home to Klondyke in Division Four.
Perrins lost for the tenth match in a row and stayed bottom of Division Five after a 7-1 thrashing by Euroglaze B.
Dodworth moved within six points of Premier Division leaders Lundwood with a game in hand after a 3-2 home win over Worsbrough Common.
