A BARNSLEY Primary School has undergone a £1.7m refurbishment.

Barnsley Council has funded the makeover at the United Learning trust’s Hunningley Primary School at Stairfoot.

The improvements have been carried out in three phases, starting last year with initial enabling works, followed by phase two, which included the conversion of two rooms into a new classroom, the expansion of the staff room, the installation of a new kitchen area, refurbishment of the hall and introduction of a new nurture area and dedicated nursery.

New perimeter fencing was also installed during the works. Phase three works, completed over the summer, included the provision of a new library area, two new classrooms and the enlargement of a further four classrooms, new toilets, the resurfacing of the playground and car park, as well as works to the fencing and footpaths.

Completion of the improvements comes shortly after Hunningley and nearby Worsbrough Bank End Primary both became academies in and joined United Learning - a national group of academies and independent schools which also sponsors the nearby secondary school Barnsley Academy.

Hunningley head teacher Caroline Dean said: “The enhancements have had a really positive impact across the school, enabling us to increase our provision, particularly in nursery and reception, as well as providing our children with the very best educational opportunities.

“The improvements have also been welcomed by parents and we are looking to hold an open event in the near future, inviting parents of prospective pupils to come and see our fantastic facilities for themselves.”
