THE BROTHER of an elderly woman who drowned herself in an icy pond hanged himself a week after her inquest.

Jack Davies, 84, of Cherry Tree Street, Hoyland suffered from health anxieties and low moods after the death of Patricia Fieldsend in March last year.

He was found slumped at the bottom of the stairs by his son early on the morning of August 10.

Sheffield coroner's court was told how the family had tried to keep his sister's inquest details from him but that he somehow found out she had killed herself.

They said his state of mind had ‘deteriorated rapidly’ in the weeks leading up to her inquest as he became increasingly worried about his own health.

The former miner, who had been a widower for 27 years, visited his doctor and was prescribed antidepressants and referred to the old age psychiatric team.

A mental health assessment was carried out on August 6 but senior community mental health nurse Daryl Fleetwood said he did not feel there was a significant risk of suicide.
