BARNSLEY Market is in the running to be named the nation’s favourite after being shortlisted in the nation’s top ten.

The market will now be judged by an expert panel before the winner is chosen by the National Association of British Market Authorities (NABMA).

Coun Roy Miller said: “We’re delighted that Barnsley Market has been named as one of the top ten in the country and we’ve all got our fingers crossed we can scoop the overall title of Britain’s favourite.

“We’ve invested millions into the market so that we could make it a unique shopping destination right in the heart of our fantastic town centre and the success that the market has enjoyed since opening in the Glass Works last month has proven that we were right to do it.

“Footfall is up by 11 per cent compared with this time last year - bucking the national trend - and we’re sure it will only get busier as more and more people discover what’s on offer.

“Winning the award would be the ultimate recognition for our hardworking traders and market team.

“We look forward to welcoming the judges to Barnsley and showing them what we have to offer.”

Barnsley will go up against markets from across the UK.

They include Bury, Cardiff, Chester, Leeds, Preston, Skipton, Shrewsbury, Belfast and Stratford Upon Avon.
