Cameron McGeehan insists he is still learning every day under Daniel Stendel despite being mainly a substitute.

The 23-year-old is one of several players vying for the central midfield position vacated by Kenny Dougall who is on international duty with Australia.

McGeehan was made captain for the initial friendlies in the summer when Stendel first arrived but has been a back-up to Alex Mowatt and Dougall in the competitive fixtures. He has come off the bench six times in league matches with his only start being against Walsall, the last time Dougall was with Australia, when he was taken off at half-time.

Since then he has played just ten minutes in more than a month. He said: “It’s been frustrating but that’s just part of the journey. Kenny and Al have been doing really well and the team is flying.

“There is not much I can do apart from keep working hard and see if my luck changes. There is a long season ahead, I want to make it work here and fight for my place. I am learning a lot from this manager and I am just staying patient. It’s funny how it works that I might play against my old club, if selected.”

McGeehan scored 28 goals in 106 games for Luton in two loans from Norwich City then a permanent spell from 2015 to last year when he was bought by Barnsley for £500,000. He has started just seven league matches in his 15 months at Oakwell and was loaned out to Scunthorpe last season.

“Luton are a very good team with a very good manager. They play a diamond formation which is a bit different to what we are used to. They are coming with good momentum and it will be tough. They won’t sit in and be defensive, they will have a go at us which might suit us.

“I have a lot of good memories of my time there. They gave me a chance and brought me on a lot in my career. They have good fans and a lot of my friends play there so I am looking forward to seeing them. I have had a little bit of banter with the lads this week.”
