MAYOR of Barnsley Coun Steve Green once again showed off his vocal skills at a charity karaoke event in the town centre last Saturday.

Coun Green was among more than 40 entrants in the contest which raised £700 for the mayor’s charities Barnsley Hospice and Barnsley Independent Alzheimer’s and Dementia Support.

He reprised a performance from earlier this year when he sang Meatloaf’s rock classic Paradise By The Dashboard Light at the Keel Inn as part of the Stairfoot Social back in June. That performance had proved a hit on social media and Hilda Booth, of Bank Street Environmental Group, who he dueted with joined him once again at the market on Saturday.

“It was absolutely brilliant,” said market trader and councillor Wayne Johnson, who organised the event.

“There was a really positive atmosphere to the market, and I think people really enjoyed it. It was just something a bit different. We had hoped to raise a few quid, but we never expected to raise that much it was fantastic.”

There were three cash prizes on offer, all of which had been donated meaning money raised through entries to the contest all went to the charities.

There was a £50 prize for the public, won by 16-year-old Gracie Malloy, and a £50 market trader prize, which was won by a trader who donated it back to charity and did not want to be named.

Fruit and veg trader Steve Price won the £100 cash raffle and donated £20 back to the charity.
