A BARNSLEY midwife who had a fundraising goal of £500 to raise awareness of Motor Neurone disease has been nominated for an award after raising more than £4 million.

Paula Maguire, 40, of Hammerton Farm Avenue, Ryhill, decided to get a few friends to do the Ice Bucket challenge for MND after spotting it sweeping America.

She has now been nominated for a Proud of Barnsley award by husband Robert who said: "After the first week, we had raised just short of our £500 target. The week after, more and more people did the challenge and even celebrities were getting involved and giving out the ICED55 text number Paula had set up.

"Before long, the page was at £30,000, then £300,000 and it was a very emotional moment when it hit £1m. Within 24 hours of that happening, it hit £2m, and then £3m and by the beginning of September had hit £4m."

Paula and Robert were honoured by the MND Association at its annual meeting in September and received and invitation to attend the premiere of the film The Theory Of Everything which is based on the life of Dr Stephen Hawking and his family.
