A GIRL who was left paralysed from the chest down after a stroke when she was younger has just returned from the holiday of a lifetime.

Mikka Lowe, 11, of Royd Avenue in Cudworth, went on holiday to Disney World in Florida with the charity Dreamflight, where she got the chance to swim with dolphins, meet the Disney princesses, visit The Wizarding World of Harry Potter and make friends with other children her age who have disabilities or illnesses.

When Mikka was three-years-old she suffered from a stroke that left her completely paralysed from the waist down and she now spends her days in a wheelchair.

For the past three years, members of the community nursing team who look after Mikka have been asking her mum, Rachel Lowe, if they could nominate her to go on holiday with Dreamflight and for the past three years Rachel has said no. Until now.

Rachel said: “I’ve been saying no to the holiday because she’s never been away from me before and she’d be away for ten days but I had to change my mind because it’s something that I could never take her on myself and it was such an amazing opportunity for her to go.

“She has had such an amazing time and has made millions of memories. She’s made so many new friends too and she came home with a memory stick full of pictures and we’ve just been looking through them, she’s had the best time.”

Dreamflight gives young children who are seriously ill or disabled a chance to go on holiday, without their parents, to Disney World in Florida

Although Mikka is paralysed and needs someone to help her with day to day activities, this hasn’t stopped her from growing up to be a normal 11-year-old girl with her eyes set on a dream job and a bright future.

Rachel added: “She’s very loud and she’s very smart, she’s just your typical little girl. She has decided that she wants to be a lawyer because she says it will make her lots of money.”
