AN exemplary soldier and devoted husband from Hoyland will receive military honours at his funeral on Monday.

More than 400 people are expected at the funeral of Stuart 'Sam' Ackroyd who was in the Prince of Wales's Own Regiment of Yorkshire for 22 years.

Stuart died aged 65 on May 27 after battling cancer.

He joined the army in 1969 when he was 18 and spent the early part of his career as an infantry soldier. He was promoted to command a section of eight soldiers as well as being put in charge of expensive equipment.

The funeral is on Monday at Ardsley Crematorium at 11.30am. The Last Post will be played by a bugler and standard bearers will attend. A celebration of Stuart's life takes place afterwards at Jump Working Men's Club.
