THERE has been a mixed response from parents and teachers about Barnsley Council’s decision to ditch the six week holidays.

Chronicle Facebook users were asked what they made of the controversial move for council-controlled schools which has resulted in a revolt by the borough’s secondary heads who are against the idea.

A meeting will be held on June 21 between secondary school leaders and the council’s education spokesman Coun Tim Cheetham, and head of service Rachel Dickinson, to discuss the decision, which comes into force in the 2017/18 academic year.

More than 290 comments on social media provided a snapshot of the strength of feeling from parents and teachers alike.

Many believed it was a good idea, claiming kids can easily get bored during the six week break, but others worried about the impact it could have on older pupils sitting exams, as the week lost off the summer break would be moved to October.

Some said it would cause confusion for parents who have children in different schools, particularly in different boroughs, and many would have preferred an extra week off at Spring Bank rather than in October.
