A NUMBER of roads in Barnsley town centre are due to be resurfaced, with highway chiefs warning motorists to expect diversions and delays.

The work is part of the Urban Centre Infrastructure scheme, which has received funding from the European Regional Development Fund Programme.

Work will take place on Eastgate, Market Hill, Royal Street, Eldon Street and Regent Street, with the earliest starting from February 3.Some work has already been taking place since the end of June, with North Midland Construction PLC carrying out improvements on a number of streets including Hanson Street and Market Hill.

The improvements include paving in natural Yorkstone and granite, new street lighting and street furniture. Roads are also being resurfaced with improved crossing facilities.
