MYSTERY still surrounds the disappearance of valuable and important paintings which are believed to have gone missing from the Cooper Gallery up to 70 years ago.

Paul Elmhirst, chairman of the Cooper Art Collection Trust, yesterday told the Chronicle he was happy to meet art lover Harvey Alexander who has contacted the Chronicle for help in solving the case which has troubled him for decades.

Harvey is from Leeds and has no real links to Barnsley other than that his father worked on Barnsley Market about 60 years ago.

But he is a long-time fan of the Cooper Gallery and says a painting by Ukrainian artist Jacob Kramer, who settled in Leeds in around 1900, had been part of the Barnsley Art Collection and years ago he did some research to try and locate it.
