LOVE it or hate it, the towering sculpture outside Barnsley Town Hall looks set to stay for a little while longer.

Barnsley Council has drawn up an agreement with Yorkshire Sculpture Park to continue loaning the rusting steel sculpture - proper name Crossing (Vertical), by Nigel Hall.

The striking 33ft £1.5m artwork has been on extended loan since it was installed in May 2013, and this latest extension is due to expire in September.

Head of culture and visitor economy at the council, Sue Thiedeman, said: “Nigel Hall’s Crossing Vertical is now a much loved piece of Barnsley’s artistic landscape and we have arranged with Yorkshire Sculpture Park to have a rolling agreement on the loan arrangements, so it is here to stay so long as the artist and Yorkshire Sculpture Park are still happy for it to be loaned to us.”

Shortly after its installation several people were caught scaling the artwork’s dizzy heights which resulted in CCTV being put up and by-laws brought in by the council to deter people from trying to climb it, threatening those who did so with a £500 fine.
