EFFORTS to reduce the number of illegal off-road vehicles in the district have begun.

The first action day of the year - dubbed Operation Lapel - took place last month following a shake-up to local policing which came into force on January 9.

Sergeant Brad Wynne, who is now based at Royston police station, told the Chronicle last year that the district’s off-road problems with be a top priority for his team of officers on the Barnsley East Local Policing Team (LPT).

“We spent time at hotspot areas in Royston in January and those specific areas will continue to be targeted,” he said. “It’s more of a deterrent until we have more officers in place.”
