THE WIDOW of Barnsley author Barry Hines collected an award at this year’s Proud of Barnsley awards which honoured his life and work.

The Best of Barnsley award was new to this year’s ceremony, and was presented to Eleanor Hines by the Mayor Coun Linda Burgess.

Barry died in March, aged 76, after being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.

Coun Burgess paid tribute to the man who wrote A Kestrel for a Knave, which was turned into the celebrated 1969 film Kes.

She said his work reflected his experiences and the realities of life around Barnsley.

Tearful Eleanor told the Chronicle: “Barry would have been in his element.”
