Josh Scowen is set to make his 100th Barnsley appearance tomorrow but is still uncertain as to whether he will add many more to that tally by signing a new contract when his deal expires in June.

The 23-year-old midfielder signed from League Two Wycombe Wanderers in January 2015 and has been a key part of the Reds' promotion to the Championship where they are comfortably in mid-table.

"To play 100 games for any club is a great achievement so it's nice to reach that milestone," Scowen told the Chronicle ahead of the trip to Norwich.

"When I first signed, I think we were 19th in League One then we didn't start well last season but everyone knows the story after that with the promotion then this season has just been unbelievable.  I have learned so much at Barnsley just from playing with great players and moving up the leagues."

He added: "I never expected to get this high. When I was at Wycombe, I was just looking at getting promoted to League One and I never expected to be in the Championship a year and a half later.  That is what football can do."

Scowen's representatives are in negotiations with Barnsley about extending his contract beyond the end of the season, but he is understood to be on the radar of several other clubs. He said: "It's just ongoing. I am a Barnsley player right now and I will continue to give 100 per cent in each game and see what happens in the summer.

"If a deal can be struck with Barnsley, then that's great. "My agent speaks to the club then comes back to me. I say 'yes', or 'no' and 'do this' or 'do that'."

Scowen has seen Alfie Mawson, who he played with at both Wycombe and Barnsley, move on to the Premier League after Swansea bought him for £5million from Oakwell in August. He admits he would love to follow his friend into the top flight.

"Being at Barnsley has been fantastic but, if a Premier League club came in for me, it would be silly to turn it down because it would be life-changing for me and my family and it is the best league in the world. I just need to keep performing and hopefully one day that chance will arrive."

Scowen's chances of reaching the Premier League with Barnsley this season have faded dramatically after a run of one win in nine matches. He said: "Our performances have been quite good, it's just maybe the little bits we were good at earlier in the season that have faded a bit. We need to be ruthless in both boxes and then we will pick up points.  QPR away (a 2-1 loss last week) was a good example because we had loads of chances and they only had two shots but they scored two."
