AS the 146th Penistone Show gets under way tomorrow, organisers say it is vital that people support the event.

Secretary Rebecca Barnetts said: “Nearly 150 years is a long time for the event to still be going and it is a reflection of the town of which we are so proud. I

“It should also be remembered that we put on this event as volunteers and if people don’t support it, it won’t continue.”

Show manager Nicholas Hoyland said a lot of work had gone into reconstituting the site after the downpours of 2017.

The show is also supporting three charities - Yorkshire Air Ambulance, Woodhead Mountain Rescue and the RABI farming charity.

The fun starts at 8am and goes on until around 6pm.

This year’s schedule includes more than 200 trade stands, show jumping, sheep, cattle, pigs, goats, dog shows, children’s crafts, cookery displays, live music and a grand parade.

There is also an agricultural machinery demonstration.

Mr Hoyland is particularly pleased with interest in the shire horse classes.

He said the show has 43 entries whereas the Great Yorkshire Show only managed 17. “So we must be doing something right there,” he said. “Exhibitors are coming from all over as the shires are having a renaissance.”
