A BUILDING described as the social hub of Grimethorpe has closed.

The Welfare Hall, off Clear View, was taken over by OSCAR - a not-for-profit group which provided help to families and youngsters - after Brierley Town Council’s abolition in May.

Barnsley Council, which owns the venue, told the Chronicle that it is now on the look out for a new tenant although the possibility of the building being sold remains.

Coun Alan Gardiner, cabinet spokesman for corporate services, said: “OSCAR served notice on the council advising that they were no longer in a position to manage the property and the building has now been returned to Barnsley Council.

“Voluntary Action Barnsley has been made aware of the position and enquiries have been made with other partners to see if there are any interested parties who would want to manage or use the building.

“We will also look to establish if there is any interest in the property from a commercial point of view.”
