DAN Jarvis WILL be Labour's candidate for Mayor of South Yorkshire after an apparent U turn by the Labour Party over whether he could carry on as both mayor and MP.

A spokesman for the party said it endorsed Barnsley Central MP Dan Jarvis as its candidate for the Sheffield City Region mayoral election, adding 'issues' over his candidacy had been 'resolved'.

There had been a stand-off after Labour's ruling National Executive Committee took a decision days before Dan was declared the candidate to say that its MPs could not hold more than one full time elected post at a time.

Dan declared he would not step down from Parliament, leaving uncertainty over whether he would be allowed to continue with his candidacy for mayor.

But according to an announcement this morning, the matter has been resolved and Dan will continue to serve as mayor if elected, and as MP for Barnsley Central.

Mr Jarvis said: "I am honoured to be Labour's candidate for the Sheffield City Region mayoral election and I am looking forward to the campaign.

"This is an important role at a crucial moment and we must ensure that we elect a Labour mayor who will deliver a bold and radical plan for delivering real change for the people of South Yorkshire."
