It was standing room only at a fundraising evening to mark the battle against cancer being fought by young Alex Bird.

Alex, ten, has been diagnosed with a form of leukaemia plus a cancerous ear tumour and has started three years of intensive chemotherapy and steroid treatment.

But that didn't deter him from throwing himself into helping prepare for the fundraising concert to raise money for PACT - a charity based at Sheffield Children's Hospital which works to improve the lives of children with cancer.

What made the concert, at St Edward's Church,  even more special was that it was given by the Barnsley Metropolitan Band which featured Alex's brother Matthew, 14.

Lindsey, of Ladymead, Monk Bretton, said: "It was an amazing success - people were queuing out of the door and filled the church."

It raised £1,957 but people can still donate at www.justgiving.com/Alex-Bird1
