A RAZOR-sharp eight-inch improvised knife was the last thing a dad expected to find when he and his 18-month-old son were unpacking a new toy ordered online.

Dad-of-three Danny Williams was horrified when supervising his son Leo pulling pieces of the small electric trike out of the cardboard box ready to assemble, when he spotted what he described as a ‘shiv’ as his son was reaching in.

“I’d just turned around from helping my other kids unwrap their presents,” said Danny, 40, of Aldham House Lane, Wombwell.

“We’d been getting a bit out at a time. He was reaching down into the box and I saw it, just next to the handlebars inside the box. I grabbed him and pulled it back.

“It’s a handmade razor-sharp shiv. I used to work in warehousing so I knew straight away what it was, it’s a makeshift shiv used for opening up boxes.

“Someone’s just dropped it inside the box and sealed it up.”

The bike had been ordered from online retailer Studio by Danny’s mum, Joyce.

It happened on Christmas Day, but Danny approached the Chronicle this week after being left dissatisfied with the firm’s response to the family’s complaint.

Danny said there was an apology but he thinks he should receive compensation because it was a very serious error and some assurances lessons have been learned to stop it happening again.

“I believe it's not about what did happen, but what could have happened. It could have been horrendous.

“He’s just a little boy. If I’d had my back turned just a few seconds longer he could have had it in his mouth.”

The firm was asked to provde a comment but did not respond.
