Vera, 78, is a founding member of Worsbrough Common Community Association, which has been named one of the best in the country. She picked up the award from the Duke of York.

When the association was launched 14 years ago, the area was regarded as one of the worst areas of Barnsley.

"It was bleak back then, it was not a nice place to be, Worsbrough Common had gone downhill and I decided we all deserved better. So I got together Rev Judith Trickett at St Luke's Church and we agreed we were going to do something about it."
