A BARNSLEY woman has turned her business and home into a makeshift laundrette so she can wash clothes for the homeless.

Sara Headley, who runs Sara’s Flowers and Teas on Pitt Street, has lost count of how many loads of washing she’s done for those living on the streets of Barnsley, having started laundering clothes, blankets and sleeping bags about four years ago.

Sara, 49, said: “We wash every day as and when they need things.

“The most common problem for the homeless is when their clothes get wet, or their sleeping bags and they can’t dry things.

“We give them new clothes and wash what they have and then give them back to them.

“If people come in and their sleeping bags are wet I take them to wash and give them a replacement one.

“It costs us a fortune is washing powder. I couldn’t tell you how much we use, I don’t even think about it anymore.”
