YOUTH unemployment in Barnsley has plummeted by almost 70 per cent in six years, according to latest jobs figures.

Unemployment among 18 to 24-year-olds continued to decline in June with 725 claiming benefits in Barnsley, which is a fall of 180 (20 per cent) compared to June last year. Since 2010 youth unemployment has dropped by 68 per cent.

Overall there were 3,355 people claiming job seekers’ allowance or Universal Credit last month in Barnsley, according to labour market statistics. That is a drop of 370 on the same month last year, which is ten per cent. Compared to 2010 overall claims have halved with 3,354 fewer claimants.
