BERNESLAI Homes has teamed up with children’s charity Barnardo’s to raise awareness of young carers in Barnsley.

Staff from both attended Outwood Academy Shafton last week to encourage more youngsters to identify themselves if they care for a member of their family.

An information card was give to students, which can enable them to access a wide variety of information and support from both Barnardo’s and Berneslai Homes, following a presentation.

Kate Phillips from Barnardo’s said: “There are a lot of young carers in Barnsley. Many are unknown to the service and are unaware of the support available.

“Working with Berneslai Homes to develop the card has given us the opportunity to further raise awareness and potentially reach those young carers, providing them with the opportunity to access support and advice.”

Dave Fullen, director of customer and estate services at Berneslai Homes, added: “When we know a young carer lives in one of our properties, we are able to tailor our services to meet their needs and take a little bit of pressure off, making things easier for them.”
