A MAN who allegedly racially abused a staff member at a Barnsley supermarket as he attempted to steal almost £200 worth of goods will appear in Sheffield Crown Court next month.

Antonio Costa, 55, previously pleaded guilty to stealing three sirloin steaks, two bottles of champagne, a bottle of Baileys and a box of chocolates from Morrisons on Westway in an incident in which a member of staff was also allegedly harassed on December 24.

He appeared at Barnsley Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, facing those charges and several others of shoplifting from Morrisons supermarkets in other areas of the country.

Costa, of Mount Pleasant Road in Masbrough, Rotherham, pleaded not guilty to using threatening and abusive behaviour or racially-aggravated provocation to cause distress to Nikolaos Bezati on the same occasion, when he had previously appeared in court in December.

Costa had previously appeared in court charged with stealing goods totalling £281.61 from a Morrisons shop in Huddersfield on January 22, and goods totalling £297.30 from a Morrisons shop in Newark-on-Trent across two separate incidents on September 22 and 28.

Costa will appear at Sheffield Crown Court for trial on March 18.
