AN abandoned sports facility in the middle of Grimethorpe will be brought back into use after its owners confirmed they are finalising a contract to rent it.

The Miners’ Welfare Sports Ground, on Cemetery Road, has stood empty since May after the previous tenant - Access to Sport and Recreation Ltd (ASRL) - terminated their contract after six years in the village due to the site becoming a target for fires, antisocial behaviour and criminal damage.

Last Monday crews from South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue were called to the venue at around 7.25pm to deal with a blaze in its pavilion but now the Chronicle can reveal that its owner, the Coal Industry Social Welfare Organisation (CISWO), has agreed to let the site and it is hoped the facility will re-open in 2017.
