A WOMBWELL-born woman has had a bench dedicated to her living memory at the Angel of the North.

Michele Keenan, 45 who attended Wombwell High School and lived in the area until she was 15, was chosen by Cancer Research UK to have an engraved bench created.

Michele was diagnosed with breast cancer in November last year and recently got the all clear after an operation and weeks of intensive radiotherapy.

Michele said: "I feel completely honoured to have been chosen by Cancer Research, it's overwhelming.

"They spotted my story after I entered the Race for Life, and then let me pick a spot special to me to have the bench placed."

Michele's bench now has permanent pride of place facing the Angel of the North in Gateshead, just ten minutes away from her home.

The engraving reads "Michele Keenan loved sitting here... and still does thanks to everyone who Stands Up to Cancer."

Michele added: "It's a great way of showing that people can survive this devastating disease. It really is a celebration of life."
