MORE than £2,000 has been raised for Barnsley Hospital’s breast cancer unit by a local angler after his partner was diagnosed with the disease.

John Turner, 60, of Pogmoor, organised the Fish for Breast Cancer event at The Fleets last Wednesday which saw more than 50 anglers take part.

John’s partner, who did not want to be named, was diagnosed with breast cancer in April. She has undergone surgery and chemotherapy.

John had hoped to raise a few hundred pounds by attracting 15 anglers.

He said: “After meeting Soumen Ghosh, the fantastic surgeon, and Judith Atkinson from the breast cancer specialist team I decided to get a few anglers together and see if we could raise a few hundred pounds for the breast cancer unit at Barnsley Hospital.

“Word spread through the fishing fraternity and more than 50 anglers from all over Yorkshire and Lincolnshire wanted to take part.

“I would really like to thank everyone who donated and all the anglers who came to take part. Some travelled great distances to fish my event, which is amazing.”
