A BARNSLEY company has helped give two deaf children from one of the most deprived parts of Africa the gift of sound, music, and speech.

Hearing implant specialist, MED-EL, who have their UK office at Dodworth Business Park, donated two of their cutting-edge cochlear implant systems to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Blantyre, so Malawi's first ever cochlear implant surgery could take place.

A specialist team from the Yorkshire cochlear implant service travelled 5,000 miles to perform the delicate surgery on 16-year-old Richard Mohammed and nine-year-old Joyce Chapotera.
