BARNSLEY Hospital will end this financial year with an estimated deficit of £16.2m - £5m more than planned.

A spokesman for the hospital said this was primarily down to winter pressures faced by the hospital, which has seen the opening of an ‘escalation unit’ during the busy periods which requires more staff and resources.

The spokesman added: “The planned deficit for 2015/16 is £11.2m. We are currently adverse to plan and, at this stage, the forecast for this financial year is a deficit of £16.2m.”

The financial worries came about in March 2014 when a whistleblower discovered a £2.3m black hole in the accounts which later grew to £12m.
