AT LEAST 17 vehicles are now known to have left the road at an accident blackspot on the edge of Hoyland, despite efforts to improve safety.

Vehicles regularly leave the road while negotiating a bend on Broadcarr Road, leading to fears that a series collision could occur.

So far there have been no serious consequences, but on two occasions occupants of stricken vehicles have needed to be cut free.

Trees also had to be cut down to allow for the recovery of a Range Rover which had ploughed so far into the woodland it could not be moved.

Barnsley Council and South Yorkshire Police have both been made aware of the problems and work has been done to try to improve safety, including the installation of warning chevrons, though blame for the situation has been put down to drivers’ speed.
