EXPLOSIVES were used by thieves to extract a supermarket’s cash machine early on Wednesday.

The Co-op in Mapplewell was targeted at around 1am.

Residents reported hearing an explosion, which damaged the store’s entrance.

It meant the shop was closed until 3pm while debris was cleared.

A police cordon was put in place when they arrived at the scene, which remained until around midday on Wednesday, and an appeal for information has been issued.

A Co-op spokesman said: “We can confirm that an incident occurred at our Mapplewell store on Blacker Road in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

“Fortunately, no-one was hurt and the store reopened later that day. The Co-op takes retail crime very seriously and implements a wide range of measures to deter criminal activity and aid convictions.

“We appeal for anyone with information to come forward to the police.”
