THE NEXT steps in the regeneration of Barnsley town centre were unveiled yesterday, with the announcement that major cinema operator Cineworld and Superbowl have signed up to the ambitious scheme.

In three years’ time the town centre will boast a bold new face - The Glass Works. Alongside the cinema and bowling, it will include 25 new shops, ten restaurants, a new library, refurbished market, public square and a new 500-space car park.

It is being built on a 3.8 hectare site in the heart of the town centre, between Cheapside, Kendray Street and May Day Green, and close to the transport interchange.

Development manager Queensberry, which has the job of luring in top retail brands and major players from the leisure industry, says there has been ‘a very positive response’ from businesses interested in being part of the changing face of Barnsley.

Among the first to sign up is Cineworld, bringing a 13-screen venue to the town as part of its ‘next generation’ of multiplexes. It will also boast a ‘super screen’, with state-of-the-art 3D projection and sound.

Also announced is Superbowl UK, which will have 12 bowling lanes, laser quest, a soft play centre, lounge bar and food diner, as well as a modern amusement arcade arena.
