BARNSLEY Council is in negotiations to purchase a ‘key’ building which could pave the way for more businesses to expand or set up in the town centre.

The Core, on County Way, was built in 2008 and offers office space and conference facilities.

Voluntary Action Barnsley, which owns the building, is moving to Priory Campus, Lundwood.

The council sees the modern facility as an opportunity to entice businesses to a prominent location in the town centre, which is a stone’s throw away from Barnsley Interchange, and boost jobs in the longer term.

Council leader Coun Sir Steve Houghton said: “We’re looking into its alternative use and although it won’t happen immediately, this is very good news for the town centre.

“The Digital Media Centre is already there and we see this as a mark two version of that, the idea being that it will enable start-up businesses or those who want to expand to move to the facility.”

The next stage of the proposal will be discussed by ruling cabinet members on Wednesday.
