A COUPLE who had a long-distance courtship while one was at sea have celebrated their diamond wedding.

John, 84 and Barbara Sullivan, 80, from Morrison Place, Darfield, celebrated 60 years of marriage last Thursday.

They met at a dance at Wombwell Baths, while John was serving in the Merchant Navy.

After a long-distance courtship of three years, they eventually wed at St Michael and All Angels church in Wombwell.

John said: “I had known her before then but I first started courting her when we met dancing at the baths, on my first leave from the navy.

“The key to success has been give and take. There has to be some compromise.”

They have three children, Michael, Kay and Jill, five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

They celebrated with a family meal.
