A LOCAL dementia charity is calling for volunteers after it was revealed this week that dementia is now the biggest cause of death in England and Wales.

Barnsley Independent Alzheimer’s and Dementia Support is calling for volunteers in order to help as many people as possible.

Chief Officer, Linda Pattison said: “Research and treatment have not so far been able to keep pace with the number of people getting Alzheimer’s Disease and other related conditions which are putting a huge strain on the NHS. This means that organisations such as BIADS are becoming increasingly important and we want to tell everyone living with dementia that they are not alone and that we are here to help.

“There are 3,000 people with dementia in Barnsley but when you take their family and friends into account the number actually affected is many more.”
