KIRK Balk students who fail to comply with existing rules over wearing jewellery and make-up run the risk of being excluded after the academy re-opens on Monday.

The school has written to parents to remind them of the restrictions over jewellery, which means rings, bracelets and facial piercings are banned.

Any make-up must be discreet, which means excessive foundation, lipstick and eye make up, along with false or coloured nails all fall foul of the rules.

Those found wearing jewellery will be asked to remove it in future, with parents invited to collect the items from the school office - a protocol which already exists for mobile telephones.

Staff discretion will be used to establish what degree of make-up qualifies as discreet, with those deemed to be breaking the rules asked to remove it.

Those who have broken the rules will face the sanction of a detention period after school, but any who refuse have been warned they could face exclusion.

The academy has a range of rules in place and restrictions over the type of footwear allowed, introduced recently, has left principal Dean Buckley "delighted" with the response from students, alongside a policy of no mobile phones, which helps the school to make sure its safeguarding procedures for children work effectively.

Leadership at the school has recently been flagged up as "good" by Ofsted inspectors and Mr Buckley has told parents the school has a determination to "focus on standards as we understand that outcomes for children are paramount for their future life chances".
