A BARNSLEY shopkeeper was threatened at gunpoint in an armed robbery on Monday night.

Ravi Thurairasa, who has run the Lifestyle Express store on Park Road near Locke Park since 2009, was confronted by two hooded men at about 9.20pm.

He told the Chronicle that the men, wearing dark clothes, had entered the shop and pointed the weapon at him before demanding money.

“I told them I couldn’t open the till without keying in a purchase,” Ravi said. “They must have known I was telling the truth as they came behind the counter and took cigarettes instead.

“It wasn’t too scary as it’s happened before they were young men no older than 30.

“The shop is full of CCTV cameras and they came in a car. The police took the recording away so I’m confident they will find who is responsible.”

A police spokesperson confirmed one man, a 28-year-old, has been arrested on suspicion of robbery.

“Police were called at 9.21pm on Monday to reports of an armed robbery at a store on Park Road in Barnsley.

“It is reported that two men entered the store, one carrying what appeared to be a handgun. It is believed they made threats to a member of staff before taking cigarettes and making off on foot down Park Road.

“A 28-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of robbery and is currently in police custody. Enquiries are ongoing.”
