CHANTS of 'dirty scum off our street' filled the air in Barnsley town centre as right-wing groups took to the streets in protest against the alleged rape of a young girl by a 'foreign' suspect.

There was a heavy police presence on Saturday with 125 officers involved, including some on horseback, to stave off any confrontation between the rally and festival-goers who had turned out for LIVE in Barnsley.

More than 100 marched in the demonstration organised by the South Yorkshire Casuals, including members of the English Defence League and the English Volunteer Force, who were shouting 'England till I die', 'whose town? our town' and 'dirty scum off our streets'.

The demonstration was calling for improved safety following the serious sexual assault of a 13-year-old girl in the Alhambra underpass on June 7. Police said the suspect was reported to have had 'a foreign' accent.

Ch Supt Tim Innes said the protest passed peacefully.
