AN investigation has been launched after a home in Royston was severely damaged by a fire.

The blaze, on Midland Road, happened on Friday evening - although a spokesman from South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said no-one was injured in the incident.

“It appears the property was unoccupied during the incident and a member of the public raised the alarm. Crews from Cudworth and Barnsley stations attended at around 7.05pm and left at around 9.45pm.

“An investigation has been started to identify the cause of the fire, but it is being treated as accidental.”

Neighbours described the panic at the scene this week, after flames were seen roaring through the property’s windows.

“It was terrifying - I’m just glad nobody was hurt as you always fear the worst when there’s a fire,” one Midland Road resident told the Chronicle. “

They closed off all the road for a few hours but fire crews acted so quickly.”
