THREE of the district’s primary schools could switch to academy status if the Catholic church and Department for Education consent to the request.

St Helen’s in Hoyland, All Angels in Wombwell and Sacred Heart in Goldthorpe are all operated by the Federation of Corpus Christi, as church aided schools by the Catholic Church.

Every school in the diocese has been asked to consider whether they should request a change to academy status, a change which takes schools out of local authority control and gives them greater independence - though that would not alter the schools’ position with regard to the Catholic church.
